Chapter 9 - Swing

Various tiny stories using the 2019 prompt list, because I looked at all the things I have to do and decided this was a good opportunity to practice my flash fiction because I am profoundly stupid.

Wish me luck.

Chapter 9 - Swing
“First time?”

He looked up at her, wide-eyed and fair-haired, smiling at his corner of the couch, and he wondered how long she’d been dead. “Yeah.”

“It takes some getting used to at first.”

An orgasmic scream sounded from the hallway, followed by loud snickering. “Tell me about it.”

“May I?” She gestured to the cushion next to him. He nodded, and she sat, barely making a dent. “Here alone, or with somebody?”

“My wife. She’s…well, she was getting a drink, and that was twenty minutes ago, so.”

“Yeah, she’d probably getting into it. Oh! Sorry, that’s really rude.”

“No, no, it’s fine. I kind of expected it. Or, hoped? I don’t know.”

She shuffled closer to him, away from the couple making out on the other end of the sofa as they drifted farther into his space. “Not into it?”

“Kind of. I mean, it was something we discussed when we were alive, but we didn’t really get around to it. And then the crash…”

“Yeah, it puts things into perspective.” She rubbed her glass, wiping off a line of condensation. “Good on you two, though. A lot of people take the ‘til death do you part’ thing at face value. It’s nice seeing a couple sticking together after they’re not…I don’t know, socially obligated? I bet it made the transition easier, knowing somebody.”

“I guess,” he shrugged, trying not to watch the trio exploring each other on the living room floor. “It’s still been a culture shock. Case in point, I would not have expected zombie swinging to be such a popular thing.”

“Well, what are we going to do, catch something?” She laughed so easily he had to join in, mostly out of obligation. “It helps pass the time, too. Sex is the most fun you can have without paying for it, as my boyfriend used to say.”

“Used to?”

“…I guess he still says it. Just not to me.” Her mouth tilted upward, but it wasn’t exactly a smile. “We didn’t pass together.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine. Just like a breakup, except neither of us wanted it.” She stared at the same trio, letting the moans in the backdrop mask the awkward silence. “Do you want to go find your wife?”

He sighed. “If she’s enjoying herself, I don’t want to get in the way.”

“You don’t have to pretend to be okay with it if you don’t want to. You’re still married, sort of. You can talk things out.”

“No. Um, well, yes, we can. But we both agreed to this. I want to try it out, at least a little. It’s only fair. I just need to work up the nerve.”

She lifted her hand, put it back down, and lifted it again. This time, it landed on his thigh. “I can help, if you want.”

“Oh, please do. It would be so much easier if I didn’t have to take the initiative right now.”

They both laughed, this time authentically, and she set down her glass to fumble with his zipper.
